Kilcoskan NS Harvest Fair 2017 Plans & Arrangements

                                                                                                              9th October 2017
Dear Parents,
In preparation for Harvest Fair this Friday, please note the following:
·        The KNS Harvest Show 2017 starts at 1pm on this Friday 13th October 2017 – all parents, grandparents etc. are welcome to attend. Each class group will perform a song / dance drama / piece or two and we’ll finish with our harvest sing-song. Our infants will go home at the usual time of 1.40pm. and school closes for all others at 2.40pm as normal.
·        Dress up – all pupils are asked to dress up on the Harvest / Autumn theme for this Friday (scarecrows / farmers etc.)
·        Making Scarecrows – if parents have old children’s clothes that they could donate tomorrow / Wednesday morning at the latest – solely check shirts and jeans / overalls / straw hats etc.  - that would be great to help us make scarecrows for Friday.
·        Conker Competition: As is tradition now in KNS, on Friday we hold our whole school Conker Competition during the morning too. Last year’s trophy winners and runners up are asked to return their trophies by tomorrow Tuesday at the latest, if not already done. We have lots of conkers in school already and thanks to all who have collected and donated so far. Please insure your child has at least 1 strung conker ready for the competition for this Friday.
·        Jams, breads, cakes, locally grown fruit and veg etc. – parents are asked to drop in any of these that we can sell at our fair by Thursday home time / this Friday morning.
·        If parents have any large plastic animals / milk churns / other harvesty or safe props that will help our school yard / garden area take on the look of a farm for Friday, please think about lending these to us on Thursday evening. They will be returned to you by Monday next.
Thanks and happy harvesting y’all!

Kilcoskan NS October 2017 Newsletter

Kilcoskan NS October 2017 Newsletter
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            5th October 2017
Dear Parents,
Below are the list of news items for the coming month up to the October midterm break in Kilcoskan NS.
Kind regards,
Mr.Ciarán Caulfield, Priomhoide

·         Well done to a group of our Junior and Senior Infant pupils who recently visited the Newpark Care Centre. The pupils met the residents, read some stories, sang some songs and got to meet lots of nice fluffy animals from Wooly Wards Farm!
·         Harvest Fair 2017: As stated in our September newsletter too, the KNS Harvest Fair will be held on Friday 13th October. We’ll have our Harvest Fair show again this year from 1pm and parents are very welcome from then to come and see the show. We’ll have a tea and coffee stall and a raffle too! As in previous years, pupils are asked to dress on the harvest / Autumn theme for the day – eg. as farmers etc. Parents are asked to drop in any home produced jams / cakes etc. for sale at the fair by Thursday at hometime / next Friday morning.
·         Reminder about October early closure for staff meeting: School will close at 1.40pm on Wednesday 18th October for all pupils, to facilitate a staff meeting. This is in-line with Department of Education procedures.
·         School closure 1 day early for midterm break: The Department of Education requires all teachers to attend further training in the New Primary Language Curriculum this school year. We have been informed that this is on Friday 27th October for Kilcoskan NS and therefore our school will be closed to pupils on this date. This means that our Halloween spooky dress up day will move to Thrusday 26th October – which also therefore will be the last school day before midterm break. School will remain closed for midterm until Monday 6th November.
·         Parent Coffee mornings: Our 3 remaining Thursday coffee mornings, organised to give parents an opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers, are scheduled from 9-9.30am as follows: 3rd & 4th Class: Thursday 12th October, 5th & 6th Class: Thursday 19th October, Special Classes: Thursday 26th October.
·         Whole School Theme for October: After 2 very successful whole school assemblies last month on the theme of friendship, this month’s 2 themes are of course Harvest and Halloween.
·         September Sports Day a great success: Well done to all our pupils who participated in last week’s very successful KNS September Sports Day in St.Margaret’s GAA Complex. Thanks also to you the parents for organising pupil collection from the club.
·         KNS Christmas Cards: Our Parents Association is currently organising the KNS Pupil Christmas Cards. Each child will design an individual card, samples of which will be provided to parents in November. Following this, parents may choose if they wish to order the cards.
·         Feet First Friday: We walk to school every Friday, leaving the Coolquay Lodge at 8.45am.

Kilcoskan NS September Sports & Activities Day

Re: Reminder about upcomding Kilcoskan NS Sports & Activities Day in St.Margaret’s GAA Grounds this Friday 29th September 2017
                                                                                                            27th September 2017
Dear Parents,
As previously notified to you, this is a reminder of our upcoming KNS Sports Day scheduled for this Friday 29th September. Please note the following:
·        Weather permitting, a bus will bring all our pupils to St.Margaret’s GAA Complex at 10am. If the weather is bad the event will be cancelled and pupils will stay in school for a normal day.
·        Assuming the event goes ahead, pupils will need to wear school tracksuits (as per every Friday), to bring their lunch as normal and we suggest an extra drink. If pupils wish and if they have them, they may bring football boots to change into for extra grip. If it’s very sunny, we suggest sun cream and a cap.
·        The infant events will have finished by 1.40pm and all other class events will finish by 2.40pm. Parents are therefore asked to collect their child at the usual times but to collect them from St.Margaret’s GAA Comlex and not school. We do not have transport provided to return pupils to school.  To help parents to find St.Margaret’s GAA Complex, there is a map on the reverse of this letter.
·        The school is covering the cost of the transport but we ask for a donation of €1 per child towards the cost of the bus hire.
·        Please sign below to confirm that you give consent for your child to go to Sports Day in St.Margaret’s GAA Complex and that you have arrangements in place for their collection from the St.Margaret’s GAA Complex at the usual home time.
Best wishes,
Mr.Ciarán Caulfield, Principal

KNS September Newsletter for Parents

KNS Newsletter September 2017
A Thuismitheoiri,
Failte ar ais ar scoil gach duine - we hope that everybody is very well settled back into the school routines again by now. Each month or bimonthly we issue a newsletter to keep everybody informed about goings on in our school and this is the first of the new school year. So, please take note of the information below.
Mr.Ciarán Caulfield, Priomhoide

·         Code of Behaviour – parents will note that in line with our new Code of Behaviour and following last year’s parental survey feedback, a behaviour report is now stamped into pupils’ journals daily. The full Code of Behaviour is available on the Principal’s Blog: www.kilcoskanbloggers.blogspot.ie and in hard copy by request from reception. Pupil behaviour is managed in line with the Code at all times throughout the school day.
·         Healthy Lunches: All new infant parents received a copy of our school’s Healthy Eating Policy – which was issued to all parents last year. This too is available at www.kilcoskanbloggers.blogspot.ie – please continue to abide by this policy to insure your child has a healthy lunch. Lunch waste is to be brought home.
·         KNS Active School Day: Noting that our June Sports Day had to be called off due to rain, as promised we have rescheduled an Autumn Active Day to take place in St.Margaret’s GAA Complex. The date is set for Friday 29th September. To avoid hassle for parents, weather permitting on the day, we will transport all pupils from Kilcoskan NS by bus to the complex at 10am. Pupils will stay at the complex for the day doing their events and activities.  We then ask parents to collect their children from St.Margarat’s GAA grounds – but at the usual home times. If the weather is bad, the event will be cancelled and due to other events coming up, we unfortunately won’t be able to reschedule. Of course, we will have the summer Sports Day in May / June 2018 too – when parents will be welcome to come as spectators and join in novelty events etc. too.
·         Harvest Fair: Back again this year on Friday 13th October. Harvest Fair is our annual celebration of all things to do with the harvest. We’ll have visiting speakers for our pupils, the conker competition and the Harvest Show. Parents will be welcome from 1pm. Pupils can dress on the Harvest theme for the day – more details will follow closer to the event.
·         KNS Garden Harvest: Last spring we planted lots of fruits and vegetables in our school garden. This week we dug up our leeks, beetroots, carrots and potatoes. The winners of our “KNS Potato Race” were 3rd & 4th class – which means they grew the biggest crop!
·         Our KNS After-School Extra Curricular Activities timetable for 1st to 6th class will issue later this month, to start in October.
·         KNS Whole School Educational Themes: Each month, like last year, we have a whole school theme which informs some of our pupils’ class lessons. We share our work on these themes at Friday assemblies in our Green Room / Seomra Glas every second Friday. The themes for the coming term are:

o   September: Friendship and back to school.
o   October: Harvest Fair and Halloween
o   November: Multiculturalism
o   December: Christmas

·         Halloween Dress-Up: All pupils are welcome to dress up for a Halloween themed school day on Friday October 27th, the last day before October midterm break. School will be closed from Monday 30th October – Friday 3rd November inclusive. Note also that school closes on Wednesday 18th October for all pupils at 1.40pm as per the School Calendar.
·         Application Enrolment: Please submit any applications for junior infants 2018 to reception. The current closing date for applications is November and places will be issued promptly thereafter.
·         Garden upgrades and Yard: There is now a fence around the garden and a managed system for its use daily by pupils – 5 children per day per mainstream class can choose to be in the garden for breaks. Outside of break times the garden is an educational facility. The garden now has a meadow zone, a developing biodiversity and composting zone, a fruit and vegetable zone, a herbaceous border (flower bed), the intercontinental plants zone and an infant play area.  Pupils continue to play in class specific yard-zones at break times.
·         Book Fair: During the week beginning Monday 25th September, to encourage our pupils to read for pleasure, we will host a book fair in the school. This means that display cabinets of new books will line the corridors outside our classrooms for that week and pupils can view the books daily. With parents’ permission pupils may then buy a book if they so choose. This event was agreed in consultation with our Parents Association. Of course, there will absolutely no pressure on any child to buy a book.
·         Hand towels: Some of our class pupil toilets have automatic hand dryers but to insure all pupils’ hands are fully dried after washing, we ask parents to provide their child with a small towel / face cloth that can stay in their bags daily.
·         New homework systems from 1st – 6th class (mainstream classes): Infant pupils have tailored homework arrangements which have already been communicated to parents. The new homework system is as follows:
Nightly (as per class level 1st – 6th): English spellings to be learned and put into sentences, daily section of English in Practice practise book to be completed. Maths: daily section of Mental Maths practise book and some consolidation work on the current class maths topic at teacher’s discretion (eg. division / length etc.), English reading: nightly, Gaeilge: currently at teacher’s discretion - whole school formal system to be communicated after Halloween. There is no homework on Fridays.
·         New assessment systems: All pupils this year will have an assessment portfolio for literacy, numeracy and Gaeilge. Samples of work will be put in this monthly and kept in class for the year. In literacy and numeracy especially this year, we are focusing on self assessment – meaning that pupils will increasingly come to know the criteria for good work themselves. For literacy and numeracy, from infants to sixth class, such criteria are on display in classrooms.
·         PE days for wearing tracksuits: Tuesdays and Fridays as before. From next week our Gaelic Games Promotion Officer will facilitate GAA games sessions with teacher during PE lessons on Tuesdays.
·         Coffee Mornings to meet teachers: Before midterm break, it is our intention to host a coffee morning for each class level to provide parents with an opportunity to meet fellow parents and their child’s teacher in informal setting. We will communicate specific dates for these early next week.

·         Feet First Friday: Escorted walk to school (as before) from the Coolquay Lodge at 8.50am starting Friday 22nd September. If parents wish therefore, pupils may be brought to the Lodge car park before 8.50am on Fridays – parents will be welcome to walk too!

KNS Sports Day Cancelled

Unfortunately, due to bad weather, our KNS Sports Day 2017 has been cancelled.

Thursday, June 22, 2017

KNS Sports Day 2017

                                                                                 22nd June 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As notified to you in last month’s newsletter, next Wednesday 28th June is our whole-school KNS Sports Day 2017. This year, in a change from previous years, we are holding the full event in St.Margaret’s GAA Complex. The reason for this is so that we have a large enough and suitable safe grass surface upon which to run all of the events. So, rather than dropping children to school next Wednesday, we ask that all pupils be dropped to St.Margaret’s GAA grounds for 9am and collected at 1.40pm (infants) or 2.40pm (for all other class levels). That is to say that we are not going to be based in Kilcoskan NS next Wednesday at all – everything will be in St.Margaret’s GAA grounds for the full day. The grounds are a short 7 minute drive from Kilcoskan NS and there is a map below showing where it is relative to our school.
Just like previous years, parents are welcome to attend the event from 12.40pm. And, now that we’ll have a safe grass surface, this year will see the return of the eagerly contested parents’ race on Wednesday afternoon – there is still some time to train! http://pix.iemoji.com/images/emoji/apple/ios-9/256/winking-face.png Please insure that your child has a suitable packed lunch, additional drinks and is wearing their school tracksuit – with shorts if the child wishes. Of course we recommend sun cream and caps etc. at this time of year too.
Please complete the slip below and return it to the school by Monday 26th June confirming that you have arrangements in place to insure that your child will be at St.Margaret’s GAA Club grounds next Wednesday for the Great KNS Sports Day 2017. If the weather is bad we will text parents by 8.30am on the morning with an update.
Best wishes,
Mr.Ciarán Caulfield, Principal
------------To be detached and returned to Kilcoskan NS by Monday 26th June 2017--------

I confirm that I have arrangements in place for my child to be at the KNS Sports Day 2017 in St.Margaret’s GAA Complex on Wednesday 28th June 2017, to be dropped there for 9am and collected by 1.40pm (infants) or 2.40pm (all other classes).  Child’s Name:_______________________ Parent Signature:_______________________
